Description |
The Jaeger 4 ATM was produced for the French watchmaker for a very short period between 1968 and 1971. This watch is certainly one of the more mysterious chronographs out there as to why it was produced, but with an estimation that less than 100 examples were produced, this is probably one of the rarest chronographs of that era.
As there is no official model name for this watch, it is nicknamed ‘4 ATM’ due to the engraving on the caseback denoting its depth rating. With a typical panda dial layout and large bevelled case, this is a classic chronograph from the ‘60s reminiscent of many other sports watches of the time. This example has aged in a beautifully unique way - with the silver sunburst dial developing a charming champagne-coloured patina, while the black sub-dials have transitioned into a subtle purple-grey shade. This imparts a remarkable depth to the 4 ATM, as it reflects varying tones depending on the lighting conditions. Powered by the trusty Valjoux Cal. 72, it is a high-quality column wheel movement that is shared with watches such as the famous Rolex Daytona and Heuer Autavia, amongst others. This is truly an uncommon sports chronograph from the late ’60s and it is so rare, that to this day it remains largely under the radar. CONDITION REPORT This Jaeger 4 ATM is in fair condition overall. The case is in very good condition with its lugs still thick and bevelling still very visible. The caseback retains its engravings, with its serial number, depth rating and model number all legible. There are minor scratches throughout the watch, which is consistent with its age. The silver sunburst dial is in fair condition, it has aged to a champagne tone with its black sub-dials that have gone purple-grey. There is minor spotting on the periphery of the dial around the hash marks, visible in the photographs. There is also some loss of lume on the hour hand. The bezel is similarly faded, consistent with this example and it has developed a very nice gradient, starting with a deep black from the inside of the bezel and fading to a grey tone towards the perimeter. It comes as a watch only. It is in full working order and is keeping time within accepted vintage standards.
