Last night, November 13, 2024, was the big night: the red carpet was rolled out in Geneva for this year’s “Oscars of the luxury watch world.” The Grand Prix d’Horlogerie De Genève (GPHG) has been awarded annually in Geneva since 2000 and is considered one of the highest honors in watchmaking. Now the coveted trophies have been awarded once again, with the most prestigious category, the “Aiguille d’Or” (Golden Hands), as the crown jewel. Chrono24 founder Tim Stracke, who joined the prestigious jury for the first time this year, actively participated in the selection of the winners in the various categories. Let’s take a closer look at some of the awards. You’ll find a complete list of winners at the end of the article.
GPHG 2024 – Aiguille d’Or Grand Prix
This year’s winner of the most prestigious category, the Aiguille d’Or, was the Portuguese Eternal Calendar from IWC Schaffhausen. Launched at Watches and Wonders 2024, it’s the first secular perpetual calendar from IWC Schaffhausen. The special feature of this timepiece is that it takes into account the leap year exception in the Gregorian calendar by skipping three leap years over a period of 400 years. Furthermore, the moon phase is calculated so precisely that it deviates by only one day every 45 million years.
GPHG 2024 – Best Ladies’ Watch
The nominees for this year’s Ladies’ Watch Prize were:
- Arnold & Son – Perpetual Moon 38 Night Tide
- Chopard – Alpine Eagle
- Fabergé – Colours of Love Rose Gold Rainbow
- Hermès – Hermès Cut
- Parmigiani Fleurier – Tonda PF Automatic 36mm Diamonds Set
- Van Cleef & Arpels – Lady Hour Nuit
And the winner is… Van Cleef & Arpels, with a watch from their Jour Nuit collection, first launched in 2008. Three years in the making, the winning timepiece is a complete redesign of the Jour Nuit line. This timepiece features a diamond-encrusted moon and stars, which pursue a yellow gold guilloché sun around the watch’s aventurine crystal dial without ever reaching it. The dial is fitted with a disc that rotates almost imperceptibly.
GPHG 2024 – Most Iconic Watch
The nominees in the “Iconic Watch Prize” category were as follows:
- Breitling – Navitimer B12 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaute
- Hublot– Classic Fusion Original Yellow Gold 29mm
- IWC Schaffhausen – Big Pilot’s Watch 43 Tourbillon Markus Bühler
- Louis Vuitton – Tambour
- Piaget – Piaget Polo 79
- Urwerk – UR102 Reloaded
Piaget won the Iconic Watch Prize with its iconic Polo 79. The watch beat off some stiff competition from the Breitling Navitimer and IWC Schaffhausen’s Big Pilot. Piaget first presented the Polo in 1979, to shape the spirit of the 1980s. The Polo 79 celebrated its comeback this year, to mark the 150th anniversary of the brand.
GPHG 2024 – Best Chronograph Watch
This year’s best chronograph nominees were as follows:
- Angelus – Instrument de Vitesse
- Louis Vuitton x Rexhep Rexhepi – LVRR-01 Chronographe à Sonnerie
- Massena Lab – Chronograph Monopoussoir Sylvain Pinaud x Massena Lab
- Parmigiani Fleurier – Toric Split Second Chronograph
- TAG Heuer – Monaco Split-Seconds Chronograph
- Zenith – Chronomaster Original Triple Calendar
This year’s winner of the prize for Best Chronograph Watch was Massena Lab’s Chronograph Monopoussoir Sylvain Pinaud x Massena Lab. The first collaboration between Massena Lab and Sylvain Pinaud, this model is limited to 10 pieces. Sylvain Pinaud is considered one of the most talented up-and-coming watchmakers of our time. He won the Meilleurs Ouvriers de France (MOF), a prestigious French watchmaking award, as well as the GPHG “Horological Revelation” award in 2022 for his own Monopusher Chronograph. The collaboration with William Massena and the development of the handmade Monopusher chronograph earned them the next GPHG award of their young careers.
GPHG 2024 – Best Tourbillon Watch
The following timepieces were nominated for this year’s Tourbillon Watch Prize:
- Chopard – L.U.C. 1860 Flying Tourbillon
- Daniel Roth – Tourbillon Souscription
- Moser & Cie – Streamliner Tourbillon Skeleton
- Rèmy Cools – Tourbillon Atelier
- Sartory Billiards – SB06-24HM “La Nuit”
- Voutilainen – Tourbillon 20th Anniversary
We published an extensive article about Daniel Roth just a few days ago. Now we can congratulate him! It was almost a foregone conclusion that Daniel Roth would take home this award after all the acclaim he has received over the past few months. If it wasn’t on the world stage before last night, Daniel Roth’s new tourbillon certainly is now. Founded by Daniel Roth himself and revived by the LVMH Group, the brand has fascinated the watch world with its unmistakable, iconic case and the perfectly placed tourbillon at the center of it.
