IWC Portugieser Chronograph
If you’ve ever seen the French film Anthony Zimmer(2005), you probably remember the critical role a watch played in the storyline. You might even know that it was an IWC Portugieser, the predecessor to the model we’re looking at today. In the movie, Zimmer’s watch had a black dial with white subdials and his name engraved on the back. I was immediately struck by its tidy and simple looks, but I digress… Today, I’d like to focus on another IWC Portugieser. This model was released around 2010 and has much of the same charm as its predecessor with a black dial. At 41 mm in diameter, it’s a relatively large timepiece. However, I’m fond of its beautiful white dial, gold leaf hands, and gold numerals. I also love the discreetness of the short, flat pushers. While the original Portugieser was a time-only watch, this modern chronograph clearly shares much of its DNA. It’s a gorgeous timepiece with perfect proportions.
Enthusiast’s Corner: Rare and Exceptional Timepieces
Omega Speedmaster Professional Apollo 17 40th Anniversary Limited Edition
It’s safe to say that the Omega Speedmaster Professional is now a mainstream watch. Its large fan base is increasing by the day. However, when discussing specific Omega Speedmaster Professional models, there are still plenty of niche editions. Certain timepieces are highly sought-after and demand high prices. Other models are less popular and often spend quite a while waiting to find their next owner. The Omega Speedmaster Professional Apollo 17 40th Anniversary Limited Edition from 2012 falls into the latter category. Its design is very unique, especially its dial. That being said, this shouldn’t dissuade true Speedmaster or NASA fans. The Omega Speedmaster Professional Apollo 17 40th Anniversary Limited Edition has the same case, bracelet, hands, and movement as any other Speedy. It also features an exceptional dial that helps it stand out from the crowd.
Iconic Timepieces: Great Value for Money
Seiko Jumbo 6138-3002
Regardless of age, Seiko chronographs offer great value for money. They are very well-made, robust, and attractive watches. One thing vintage editions have over newer models is that they’ve already stood the test of time. Take the Seiko Jumbo 6138-3002, for example. Seiko produced this large, 2-register chronograph in the 1970s. Collectors often refer to this model as the “Jumbo” thanks to its relatively thick 39-mm case. While that’s a relatively modest size by modern standards, it was downright massive in the 70s. Most Seiko 61387s will come without their original bracelet, but that’s nothing to worry about. This timepiece looks great on leather or textile NATO straps, and the original bracelet tends to break easily anyway. The dial has a nice grayish-blue tone and the yellow chronograph hand offers some contrast. The Seiko 6138 looks good on the wrist and, with proper care, will provide many years of joy.
